GGB Bearing Technology, formerly Glacier Garlock Bearings, is introducing to the European and Asian markets its complete line of filament wound plain bearings: GAR-FIL®, GAR-MAX®, MLG and Multifil. Developed by GGB, these composite bearings combine the self-lubricating properties of filled PTFE with a strong, stable structure to meet the needs of a wide variety of high-load, low-wear applications.
GGB filament wound bearings rely on a tough, high-strength composite structure consisting of epoxy-impregnated, wound glass fibers for the radial and axial strength to support high loads. They provide outstanding performance in even the most demanding dry or lubricated applications:
The natural lubricity of the bearing surface assures low friction in dry applications, making them particularly effective where the relative motion is insufficient to promote circulation of lubricants used with more traditional bearings. The self-lubricating bearings are dimensionally stable in water, thanks to minimal swelling and moisture absorption. Unlike many conventional non-metallic bearing materials, the high-strength composite structure of GGB filament wound bearings offer a thermal expansion rate comparable to that of steel, assuring maximum dimensional stability and positive housing retention.
Operating temperature is also an important consideration as it directly affects bearing load capacity and wear resistance. The GAR-FIL®, GAR-MAX®, MLG and Multifil materials consist of a rugged outer shell of filament wound fiberglass encapsulated in high temperature epoxy, allowing greater performance operation at higher temperatures than most other conventional plain bearings.
GGB filament wound bearings are available in standard sizes from 12 mm to 150 mm ID, with wall thicknesses of 2.5 mm to 5 mm and lengths of up to 400 mm. Bearings with ID sizes from 10 mm to over 500 mm with custom wall thicknesses and lengths are custom made to order. Special shapes are also available based on customer requirements.
GAR-FIL®, GAR-MAX®, MLG and Multifil products are manufactured under DIN EN ISO 9001, ISO/TS 16949 and ISO 14001 approved quality management systems. GGB North America is certified to AS9100 revision B complying with the requirements of the aerospace industry’s quality management system for the manufacture of metal-backed bearings and filament wound bearings and washers.
